UAE has introduced a UAE Pass, through which residents can access government services. Previously, the UAE SmartPass was in use which expired in December 2020. The UAE Pass creates an official online system which will create a national digital identity for every resident. Through a single application, residents can utilize both federal and local government services. This Pass removes the complications that arise from using multiple usernames and passwords. Apart from this, there are a few important points to note about the UAE Pass. Read on to learn more about the UAE Pass registration and its importance.
A UAE Pass: What Is It?
Smart Dubai, the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority together launched the UAE Pass. It was launched in 2018 and was considered to be the first ‘National Digital Identity’ tool for the remote identification of a person. This UAE Pass is a part of UAE’s long-term development strategies where they plan to create a sustainable environment. The UAE Pass can be used by every resident to access over 5000 government e-services using a single-user account.
Previously, the Dubai Smart Government and the Emirates Identity Authority had launched the Dubai ID. On the other hand, SmartPass was also introduced in Abu Dhabi and the northern Emirates. Together these systems were used to access government services like paying utility bills and filling up residence visa applications. The UAE Pass has replaced these previously-used systems like SmartPass and DubaiID to create a better user experience.
What All Can I Do With a UAE Pass?
Using a UAE Pass, you can avail of over 5,000 government e-services, including:
-
- Verify a signed document
- Digitally sign a document
- Prove or authenticate your identity
- Request for an official document
The pass acts as a unified digital identity, so you don’t have to come up with multiple usernames and passwords for different government authentication processes. The UAE Pass is free of charge and can be downloaded for free.
In terms of security, the UAE Pass is a completely secure and protected system. The system uses an SHA-256 hashing algorithm that has a one-way cryptographic function. The text can be decrypted back to its original form, which ensures digital identity protection. This algorithm was created by the National Security Agency in the United States.
Difference Between UAE Pass From DubaiID and Smartpass
The Dubai Smart Government and the Emirates Identity Authority introduced the DubaiID exclusively for its Dubai residents. Using this system, the residents of Dubai had access to all the e-services provided by the government. Similarly, the residents of the capital city and the Northern Emirates had access to various online government services using the UAE Smart Pass. This allowed the users to update their profile, request a reset of the pin number and access the list of transactions.
UAE Pass is a joint initiative by Smart Dubai, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority. It acts as a unified login system for all government services across the country. The electronic signature can be used for transactions and documentation across all Emirates.
If you have a Dubai ID, it should be converted into a UAE Pass. The Smart Pass could be used till December 31, 2020, after which it was mandatory to upgrade the Smart Pass to the UAE Pass.

Consolidated Services Under UAE Pass
‘The Digital Future’ is an initiative organised by Smart Dubai. It has been developing under the 100-day plan for the ‘Government Development Track’. The initiative aims to increase the rate of adoption of the UAE Pass by the citizens and residents of the UAE. This will help to lay the foundation for a digital and modernised future across all government and private sectors. The UAE Pass policy was adopted by the Strategic Affairs Council on May 1, 2020.
The UAE Pass was developed with the intention of developing a better government service ecosystem and enhancing the communication process between the local entities, the federal communities and the private sector. Using the UAE Pass will benefit the citizens as they no longer have to physically visit a customer service centre to submit documents and paperwork for the identification process. The pass acts as an identity document which comes with a digital signature. This sort of technology adds a level of trust to government transactions.
Wrapping Up
The UAE government has officially announced its decision to consider the UAE Pass as the only digital identity of the citizens and residents. With the help of the UAE Pass, the authorities have addressed multiple challenges and brought about solutions to smoothen the process. The absence of a digital signature and the multiple login IDs have been removed to make it easier for citizens to access government services.
