The Sharjah British International School aims to create holistic individuals with well-developed creative skills, enhanced confidence, and increased awareness about the changing world. Core subjects such as English, Maths, and Science, in addition to general subjects such as History, Geography, Languages, Art, Physical Education, and Music, are taught in the school. Below is the grade-specific list of subjects:
Kindergarten (KG)- Foundation Stage 1 and Stage 2
The students of the kindergarten are taught subjects based on the British Curriculum. Focus is placed on increasing language and literacy skills and initiating numerical skills. Basic sciences are also part of the curriculum. Physical activities, creative arts, and personal social and emotional development are also part of the curriculum.
Primary School (Years 1-6)
The Primary Years curriculum is designed in such a way that the difficulty increases as the years progress.
- Benchmark Exam: The students take up the Checkpoint exams at the end of Year 6.
- Core Subjects: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music and PE.
- Wellness: Focus on the development of life skills, social understanding, and maintaining health.
Middle School (Years 7-9)
The Middle School curriculum of the Sharjah British International School includes the following:
- Core Subjects: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography.
- Modern Foreign Languages: In-demand global languages like French, Spanish, and Arabic are taught.
- Design and Technology: Subjects are designed to give hands-on experience in design and are taught about modern advancements in technology.
- Personal Development: Emphasis on health, social awareness and personal well-being is given.
- Physical Education: Training for advanced physical sports and skill development is a key focus as well.
High School (Years 10-12/ Grade 9 to Grade 12):
The Sharjah British International School offers both the British and American curriculum in the High School grades from Year 10/Grade 9 to the students.
British Curriculum:
- Comprehensive Stream Selection: The students get to choose subjects from either one of the three streams. They are also required to select elective subjects according to the stream chosen.
- Continuous Language Development: Foreign language education is continued.
- Holistic Development: Equal importance to co-curricular activities and specialised training in performing arts.
- Physical Education: Significant focus is given to the physical well-being of the students along with their academics.
American Curriculum (Grade 9 to Grade 12):
The school offers an American curriculum from Grade 9. The curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards Initiative (for English Language Arts and Maths) and Next Generation Science Standards (Science).
- Comprehensive Core Subjects: The curriculum is designed in a way to adequately train and provide knowledge in core subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Social Sciences.
- Foreign Language: Students are offered the choice of foreign languages such as French, Mandarin, German, or Spanish.
- Physical Education: Equal emphasis on physical well-being with sports activities, fitness, and physical exercises.
- Wide Range of Electives: Students can choose from a huge number of elective courses, both academic – psychology, computer science, and many more, or creative ones such as art or music.
- AP Courses: Students have the opportunity to do college-level courses and get respective credits in the universities if they perform well.
